This church escaped the renovations made to other major churches in Bavaria during the Gothic and Baroque periods. The town center had simply shifted from Altenstadt to Schongau. The church has many treasures such as the unusual giant Romanesque crucifix that is 3.2 meters high and dates from 1200 AD.
