Münster St. Maria und Markus in Reichenau, Germany – UNESCO

A Gothic choir, a Romanesque western part, and ship-shaped Norman roof trusses

General info

The Münster Sankt Maria und Markus, which is located in the center of the Catholic parish of Reichenau, was the abbey church of the Reichenau monastery.
Construction of the Benedictines began in 724 with a wooden church. As is common for a large Münster, the building history extends over several epochs.

The Gothic choir, the Romanesque western part with the outstanding tower in honor of Mark the Evangelist, and the ship-shaped Norman roof trusses are worthy of mention.

The western part of the church is dedicated to the evangelist Markus, whose bones are kept in the treasury and are presented during the procession during the holidays. What is striking is the red, baroque Holy Blood Altar. In it is the Holy Blood Relic which contains blood-soaked splinters from the Holy Cross.
